(San Diego or tall blue sedge). A new introduction by Norwell Nurseries to this country! Its architectural shape & height coupled with its silvery blue, evergreen foliage make it unique in the current garden repertoire. In Britain it attains a height & spread of 30" x 24" but in warmer areas reaches up to 6'. A good garden soil, in sun or partial shade, avoiding cold, winter winds suits it best. Established clumps can be cut down after the silvery blue flowers are produced from mid-spring to early summer. The new foliage is then at its bluest best.

Visitors to the gardens are amazed that this seemingly luxuriant and tropical looking plant is hardy. Not only that but it revels in shady conditions, especially in good soil. The Canna-like leaves are on stems which freely produce dark red bracts from which exotic soft orange hooded flowers are produced. Clumps steadily.

On the face of it a perennial cornflower sounds difficult to get worked up about, but the reason that this frequently sells out is because requests from nursery visitors are so high, I hope that this year I will have a few extra plants. The richest purple large cornflowers over healthy silver foliage. Plus the bonus that it grows well in dry shady areas. A real aristocrat.

Not sure about the name its what I acquired it as....Distinctive jagged grey green leaves covered with masses of spider like burnt orange flowers in autumn. The quills being red and opening orange. Lasts ages in water. A good do'er for sun or light shade not waterlogged. (-16°C)
